A brief overview of alcoholism

A brief overview of alcoholism shows you getting angry when you cannot get that drink, drinking for breakfast lunch and dinner, hiding alcohol, lying about your drinking, losing your job, forgetting where you have been, and no memory of what you did last night. Welcome to the world of Alcoholism, welcome to what is taking your life.

What is alcoholism?

Alcoholism is the physical and mental dependence upon the consumption of alcohol. It is a disease. It can be managed but not cured. Alcoholism is a progressive disease. The cravings grow until they consume your whole world just as you have consumed it.

Why is it a problem?

Alcoholism is a problem because it is a destroyer. A dependence upon alcohol destroys families. A brief overview of alcohol lets us know why alcohol is a problem. Alcohol can cause a life time of mental problems for children, therefore having a negative effect on society. Alcohol use causes numerous accidents on our highways. It can cause a person to lose their job, family, home, business and self worth. Not to mention the trust of all who care for them. You cannot keep schedules, your work habits get slack, and everything in your life becomes secondary to that next drink.

Is it an epidemic?

Yes, alcoholism has reached epidemic levels. It is common practice to drink at the majority of social functions. The shelves of our local grocery stores are lined with the spirits of alcohol. With the downturn of the economy and the increase in foreclosures we may see an even greater rise in alcoholism. The age of drinkers are getting younger. These young people have not had a chance for any physical or mental adjustment to alcohol use.

What are the classic signs and symptoms of alcohol?

An alcoholic craves alcohol; you are physically, mentally and emotionally tied to the drug. It is like carrying a ball and chain around. A brief overview of alcoholism makes it clear that you are literally a slave to alcohol. One drink is never enough and the need to drink more and more to go to whatever place you seek or to get away from whatever place you need to get away from is a non stop process. The sweating shakes and the vomiting are classic signs of alcoholism.

How do I get help?

Fighting the use of alcohol is a life long process. Developing copping mechanisms is very important. Thanks to AA there is help for alcoholism. Alcoholics Anonymous is an organization where people get together and learn to be sober again. A brief overview of alcoholism tells us recovery is not easy, and you do not want to give up your old friend the drink, but if you attend the meetings and learn the methods that people use to get sober and to stay sober you can do it. More importantly you must want to be sober more than you want the drink.
